Christa Miller's Favorite 'Scrubs' Memories On 'Fake Doctors, Real Friends'

On this episode of Fake Doctors, Real Friends, Zach Braff and Donald Faison welcome Christa Miller, who played Jordan Sullivan on Scrubs. She’s an actress and model who’s been married to creator and executive producer Bill Lawrence for twenty years. They talk about Christa’s early career, how she met Bill, their all-time favorite episodes of Scrubs to film, her time on The Drew Carey Show, and so much more. Christa started out in the industry modeling, but she says she always wanted to be an actor. She took classes at the American Academy for Dramatic Arts and came to L.A. because she got an audition for A League of Their Own. She had to do a three-hour baseball audition with a coach before she even got a chance to read for the part, she remembers.

She didn’t book the role, but she did get an episode of Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. “Will Smith was so lovely, and it was so much fun,” she says. “That’s what got me wanting to do comedy.” A year later, she was a series regular on The Drew Carey Show. She had met Alan Ruck through an actor she was dating at the time, and when she arrived alone at a party at ABC, he offered to introduce her to his Spin City crew. “And Bill stood up in this cute suit….I remember thinking what was I doing with this actor when there are people like this in the world?” A few months went by, and she decided to call him; he was in Jamaica and didn’t answer. But two days later, “he called me back and said, ‘You better be single.’ I said, ‘I am,’ and he said, ‘I’m going to fly back and take you to dinner.’” Zach and Donald are duly impressed by Bill’s game: “Listen man, if I had the bucks, that’s exactly what I’d do too!” Donald says. 

She was nervous about being on Scrubs because she was so used to the multi-camera setup and live studio audience on The Drew Carey Show. But it felt like “a safe space to try things,” she says. “You could go and be stupid, and if it didn’t work out, it was fine because everyone was doing it….everyone would just elevate you.” Zach agrees: “Bill and the crew and everyone created this environment that was, ‘Go nuts.’ ….It gave all of us the freedom to just f**king go for it.” But more than that, they all truly felt like a family; Zach says they would hang out on weekends, even though they’d just spent most of the week together working. “Tons of camaraderie and support….everybody was happy for everybody else to be funny,” Christa says. “It was such a special time.” Listen to the episode to hear about how Christa used the Scrubs writers to prank Drew Carey, the episodes they each remember most fondly, and what one fan says that upsets the podcast producers so much that they “walk out of the room,” on Fake Doctors, Real Friends.
