How to identify Geranium maderense (Giant Herb-Robert)

This project collects observations of Geranium maderense (Giant Herb-Robert) in California for the purpose of facilitating identification and preventing misidentification of this species in iNaturalist.


Vouchers Needed: This species is not yet recognized in Jepson eFlora or Calflora. If you're a botanist and you find this plant in the wild, please submit a voucher specimen so that its presence in California can be documented.


Photo tips::

  • It’s important to get a picture of the entire plant.
  • It's also helpful to get close-up pictures of the face of the flowers, sepals, leaves, and fruits, if present.
  • If there are multiple plants in the picture, it’s helpful to crop your photo to focus on the plant of interest.

How to identify Geranium maderense:

  • Height: It grows to 120–150 cm (47–59 in) tall and wide, it is a mound-forming evergreen perennial.
  • Stems: The stems are long, upright, branched and covered with purple glandular hairs.
  • Leaves: The leaves are large, deeply divided and fern-like.
  • Flowers: It has very flowers with more than two flowers per inflorescence. There are very distinct purple glandular hairs on the pedicels. Flowers come in shades of purple, pink, and rarely white.
  • Habitat: It is grown as an ornamental plant in temperate regions, where it is hardy in mild or coastal areas.
