Discoid Fork Weed

Discoid Fork Weed

Observation - Discoid Fork Weed - UK and Ireland. Description: Discoid Fork Weed, Polyides rotunda? One of many similar rounded clumps in mid-shore bedrock pools

Discoid Fork Weed, Polyides rotunda?
One of many similar rounded clumps in mid-shore bedrock pools with a sprinkling of sand.
Rich red/brown coloured Alga with branching fronds comprising many tiny sausage-shaped balloon sections. The forked tips have paler rounded points. Attached to the rock by a minute (20-30mm) discoid holdfast (see photo 2). The discoid holdfast rules out the similar Clawed Fork Weed (Furcellaria lumbicalis).
In the hand it fell apart/crumbled into pieces.
.
If this is Discoid Fork Weed there are only six Other Observations on iSpot and three don’t have any agreements.
