Plocamium cartilagineum

Plocamium cartilagineum

Observation - Plocamium cartilagineum - UK and Ireland. Description: In this observation two different algae are shown, but both are believed to be Plocamium cartilagine

In this observation two different algae are shown, but both are believed to be Plocamium cartilagineum, or at least Plocamium. The first one was attached to some other algae (image 7). The images 4, 5 and 6 show nicely the cortical cells, which almost all have large spherical organelles named mevalonosomes. https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/jpy.12270
.
The second was found nearby. This was clearly a tetrasporophyt with numerous tetrasporangia in specific pod-like structures called stichidiae. In one case the tetraspores were released in front of my eyes (image 10).
.
In Brazil extracts from a different species of Plocamium are investigated because it is thought to be a promising source of inhibitors against toxic effects caused by certain snake bites. https://www.scielo.br/j/jvatitd/a/HN83wcqWsKrs9ZkdkmDNVSD/?lang=en&format=pdf

I will offer ID to genus level as well.
