  1. Your garden seems a habitat in its own, what more awaits? Posted 4 years ago
    1. Hopefully more! I have been here a year now, and it keeps surprising me. Just hoping after all the hard work, the insects will arrive. Posted 4 years ago
      1. I've been silently watching how you address and clean up sections of your yard. Then when I think you're done, you start yet another new section. I think by the time you finish, the first session is messy again.

For the record, I love a messy garden, allowing some chaos. Which is not to say yours is a chaos. Oh god how do I get out of this.

        1. Hahaha! It is a sort of chaos, different sections dependent on its situation. There is the wildlife pond with plants to attract bees and butterflies, the woodland section for the insects, the bird feeding section, and my bit, the sunniest part! The front garden is the latest project which I am preparing as a wild flower section, which I can just leave and let get really 'messy'! It's all been done on a very tight budget and utilizing whatever I can get my hands on. Don't think it will ever make the Chelsea Flower Show ha!!! Posted 4 years ago
          1. It is looking lovely from what I can tell. Several little thoughtful helpers for nature, as well as being able to enjoy it yourself. They're not mutually exclusive, after all.

My challenge is in convincing the spouse that not everything has to be clear cut and managed. For example, dandelions started to pop up in the lawn. "Weed, must die" was the initial thought by her. Yet this early in the season, it's the only source of nectar for the buzzers and butterflies. Putting just this little more thought into it really helps, and she's open to it.

A lot of people do love nature, they just don't know how to help it. They're pre-programmed to "manage" it. I will win this battle with patience and irreversible actions.

It's amazing how little help nature needs. I installed micro ponds. Basically buckets dug into soil. Immediately the birds come to drink, a diving beetle has made it its home, it just all helps itself after that initial tiny action.

  2. Well, thank you! I love at the moment my whole lawn is covered with dandelions and daisies, gives me an excuse not to cut it. I have left a patch of nettles for the caterpillars too. If a weed is pretty, I leave it..cheaper than plants!
It is very easy to incorporate a bit of help for nature, I love your idea of micro ponds, I should do that too. I seriously would not like to have a manicured garden, after all, a 'wild' garden is so much easier to look after than a 'managed' one. Good luck with your endeavors!
