Catalog published in conjunction with a touring exhibition of works by legendary Bauhaus and Black Mountain College artist Josef Albers organized by LACMA in 1966. Curated by LACMA director and scholar Henry T. Hopkins, the show presented the first variants of Albers’s "White Line Squares" series, lithographs composed of four nesting color squares, each with a thin uninked border. An extension of his early experimental color studies, the seventeen schemes in the series were created between 1966 and '67, numbered from I to XVII, produced in collaboration with Los Angeles print and artist workshop Gemini G.E.L. (Graphic Editions Limited). This catalog illustrated with seven color lithographs from the series, and black-and-white photos of Albers and Kenneth Tyler of Gemini G.E.L. (who contributes a foreword); with a poem and introduction by Albers, an essay by Hopkins, a chronology and bibliography. Text in English, German, and French.
