Flying our Flag on Friday! At Tulane Law’s Master of Jurisprudence program in labor and employment law, we teach legal professionals to manage risk, ensure compliance, and train their teams. In our unique curricular offerings, we delve into many of these topics. To give you a taste of these offerings, here are four ways we discuss to address unconscious bias in the workplace. 1. Educate your team and yourself – Provide education to help raise awareness and understanding. Consider providing training on debiasing, bias interruption, and bystander intervention. 2. Recognize your own biases - An important step in addressing unconscious biases is self-reflection. Start with yourself and recognize how unconscious bias can shape our perspectives and influence our actions. 3. Provide bias mitigation tools - Provide tools and training to your teams on how to mitigate unconscious biases when making decisions. 4. Encourage open communication – Create an environment of non-judgmental open communication to encourage individuals to examine their actions and existing structures to address unconscious bias. As a member of the advisory board of the NYU Center for Labor and Employment Law, I recently hosted a presentation by Jackson Maxwell, a third year law student at NYU, of his paper on antitrust issues related to competition among labor unions. Jackson now advises me that he has received three separate convocation prizes, including an award for the best student note in international, commercial, and public law.
