It’s been an absolutely incredible last few days for the Charlotte Chess Center. Over the weekend we hosted the record breaking Carolinas Classic which had 383 players from 23 states in attendance. Sunday, our very own Daniel Naroditsky was named The New York Times chess columnist. Finally, this week we are hosting the 5th Charlotte Elite Camp at the Center with former World Champion GM Veselin Topalov, Magnus Carlsen’s coach GM Peter Heine Nielsen, world renowned trainer GM Jacob Aagaard, and GM Daniel Naroditsky. It has been an amazing last few days!

Before our meals some of you may have noticed that I have been getting into the world of chess, since the pandemic started. We all know chess as a niche community, and also one of the oldest, but what I've come to realize is that this game has the potential to see much more mainstream appeal. FIDE, the international organization that has the most control over chess's growth is inherently corrupted. It serves the political powers not the chess lovers. FIDE has failed to leverage technology, the strongest tool to grow viewership, player-base, and value. FIDE has failed to fully capitalize on advents like the Chess on Twitch meta (https://lnkd.in/eYDAV2j8), Queen's Gambit, and the growth of independent chess creators (I enjoy GothamChess https://lnkd.in/e6jnNHef). I have come to appreciate chess as an amazing sport, but then quickly came to realize that those that are in charge of it's direction, growth, and strategy are asleep at the wheel. An NFT project built by a third party should not count towards innovation (https://www.fide.com/shop). The central authority for the Grandmaster title should be doing more to support their players brands. The organization that holds a monopoly on the international chess league should not be generating only 4M in revenue a year (https://lnkd.in/eb4A-h_4). I believe there is a lot of opportunity for improvement, and that is why I have chosen to join Andrii Baryshpolets' campaign for FIDE President in this upcoming election cycle as his technology advisor. Andrii is a very passionate, sharp candidate who understands very well the issues that FIDE is facing, and how to solve them. As a GM himself, he understands the climate of the game more than anyone else.
