In today's political climate, some may argue that unions have outlived their purpose, but let's not generalize.  There's no denying that having a political presence is crucial for shaping infrastructure policies. Legislators play a vital role in this, and they need to understand the work we do. West Virginia has faced infrastructure challenges for years, and now, with federal funding from the Inflation Reduction Act and the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, we have a golden opportunity to address these issues. This funding will create countless jobs and attract new companies, but we can't do it without skilled tradespeople. Two laws, Act 11 and Act 12, have facilitated this shift, leading to significant year over year rate hikes, unequal impact on low-income communities, and a loss of local control. This trend in Pennsylvania serves as a warning for other states considering similar legislation. It's crucial to stay informed about the status of your local water and sewer systems, educate yourself about the potential impact of privatization, and advocate for policies that prioritize affordability, equity, and public control.
