We moved into this house in 2020 and I’ve had so much fun making it ours over the last couple of years.

Being locked down and not able to leave the house a lot of 2020 really helped us make some big moves on this place!

So far getting to makeover Harper’s sweet flamingo nursery has been the ultimate highlight of this house, but little by little I’m falling in love with each room more!

When it comes to closets, though, one of the biggest challenges when designing a bedroom-turned-closet is ensuring that you use every inch of available storage. Here are my favorite tips on how to do that!

Amazing Closet System

I worked with Charlotte California Closets for these built ins and I can not tell you how easy they made this entire process.

I really like a done for you experience and my girl Whitney came out and helped us with everything from start to finish.

Use the Entire Wall Area

Even if your closet system doesn’t span wall to wall, you want to make sure that you’re utilizing both floor and wall space so that you make the most of your closet.

I love how my built-ins don’t go all the way to the ceiling and so that I have tons of space for storage for things like my purses on both the top and inside on the shelves.

You could also add hooks on either side of the closet systems or even the wall to hang jewelry or smaller handbags.

Maximize Storage

Clothes racks and hangers are great ways to store everything, but they can take up a lot of space. Look for simple ways to add storage without taking up much room.

Like me, if you’re a lover of hats, you can hang those directly on the wall instead of using space on a shelf.

You can use larger things like bins and baskets to get organized or you can utilize smaller organizers for shelves or even in drawers for things like jewelry, sunglasses or headbands.

Make it Easy to Access

If something is hard to reach, you’re less likely to use it. And chances are if you’re turning a small bedroom into a closet, it means you may have a lot of things.

So make sure that everything in your closet is easy to access.

For me, this means putting my shoes on shelves instead of the floor and storing my handbags within arms reach. I like having shoes on shelves because keeping things off the floor feels less cluttered even if I do have tons of shoes.

You can think of creative ways to store your clothes – maybe by season, brand, or even color so that you can more easily remember what you have and where it is.

Make it Your Own

Your closet should be a reflection of your personal style. So make sure to incorporate things that make you happy and feel good when you’re in your space.

I added some amazing art from Stephen Wilson because it makes me smile, but you could add anything from family photos to art done by you if you’re super artistic in that way!

Lots of Good Quality Lighting

One of the most important closet tips I can give you is to make sure that there’s plenty of good lighting.

Luckily, this space has a big beautiful window which helps a lot, but if your space isn’t like that, add in some extra light fixtures just to make sure you can see everything really well. These can be table lamps, floor lamps or a really good overhead light fixture.

Since I film a lot of Instagram Reels and TikTok videos in here, I also love having my ring light setup closeby as well.

Whether you use natural light or add some additional lamps, just make sure your space is well lit.

Think About Your Necessities

For me, I have to have a clothes steamer! It’s vital and so I created this little corner where I can easily grab it and get to steaming.

Of course no closet can be complete without a mirror – full length or otherwise.

You might also want to consider adding a small lounge area if you’ll be spending a lot of time in your closet. This can be something as simple as a small chair or ottoman and some pretty pillows.

Since this is also where I do the majority of my work, I have a simple round table and chairs in the middle of the room where I can answer emails or edit photos if needed.

I hope these tips help you if you’re looking to convert a small bedroom into a closet! It’s definitely been such a fun project for me and I love having this beautiful space to get ready in every day.
