Nannorrhops ritchieana, the Mazari Palm, is one of the worlds hardiest palms and grows as a large, clustering shrub with several short, erect or decumbent trunks and very thick, leathery, blue green, fan-shaped leaves. On larger plants, the crown often bifurcates into two and one partial crown usually develops a tall, erect, terminal inflorescence and withers after producing thousands of globose to ellipsoid, brownish seeds that germinate readily. The first seedling leaf of Nannorrhops ritchieana is long, narrow and grayish green. We consider Nannorrhops ritchieana the palm distributed in high elevation desert and scrubland in northern Pakistan and eastern Afghanistan to about 1700 m (5600 ft.) asl, not to be confused with the similar but quite differently behaved Nannorrhops arabica and/or Nannorrhops baluchestanica. Even though it is a desert plant, it usually inabits the beds of seasonal rivers that flow only once every few years, but give the plants access to persistent underground water. Not surprisingly, the plants with access to the most water grow to the largest size and can reach almost tree-like proportions while those that manage to survive with little moisture stay small and scrawny. It is an extremely tough, attractive and highly adaptable palm and mature Nannorrhops ritchieana are successfully cultivated in such diverse places as Florida, California, Texas, Italy, France, Hawaii, Thailand and Venezuela, indicating that it will thrive in temperate areas just as well as in the tropics. If kept dry, it may also resist temperatures as low as -20°C (-4°F) in winter. With enough summer heat, it grows relatively quickly. The common name "mazari" palm is pronounced "mazré" in Pakistan, but the palms name varies from area to area and tribe to tribe. It was our efforts in the 1990's that have first introduced this palm into general cultivation. The original spelling of the botanical name was corrected from Nannorrhops ritchiana to Nannorrhops ritchieana as the species was named after Dr. "Ritchie", not "Ritchi".
