Diphylleia sinensis

Flowering sized rhizomes.

Description

A delightful companion to the North American species, Diphylleia cymosa, this has a very glaucous, tough, thin, scallop-edged leaf pair each leaf of which is almost circular. Above this sits a thin wiry spike that holds a small cluster of white flowers of typical Berberidaceae shape (they look like little Podophyllum flowers!)  each of which has a yellow centre. The flowers are not of massive proportions, but are large for the genus and the plant is quietly lovely.

The flowers give way to attractive blue fruits that are held on (usually) red-purple pedicles and they shout for your attention in the late summer and autumn garden.

Shaded, humus-rich, conditions moist at the roots for best results, but with good drainage.

This is no longer grown here and there is no waitlist available for this species
