Description

Green flowers heavily tessellated in deep brown to such an extent that they look, from a distance, to be a solid, unbroken, lustrous brown only becoming obviously tessellated (and strongly so) when you are close up.

This is distinguished from the related F. nigra by its scent, size and linear shining leaves. An excellent garden plant, tolerant of summer water and easily grown outside in a well-drained site, preferably enriched with some humus matter .

Raised from AH.9119 (1991) originally found in former Yugoslavia, Mount Galicica above Lake Ohrid. There it grows in a very windswept, alpine environment which keeps it very dwarf and almost stunted. When grown in horticulture, this form (once called “ohridense“) grows strongly and performs very well. This is a much more obviously tessellated form, keeping its characters when grown from close-pollinated seed and, of course, when grown on from the small stolons that this selection sometimes produces.
