Large flowers, large petals. They don't last long, but they're eyegrabbers while they last. The hairy foliage pushes up in early spring, grows nice and bushy by late spring, then goes into decline and disappears by mid-summer. There are lots and lots of fancy cultivars around, but the plants we had in the early years of the garden were of the standard in-your-face red variety. Those have since passed on, and I've started a couple of different named varieties from seed since then. So far, we've seen the pastel-pink flowers of 'Coral Reef', still waiting on our 'Pizzicato Mix' plants.

We left this plant behind in our Pennsylvania garden (and wish it well); we don't grow it in Houston. Seed for this plant is included on my seed trade list About my plant portraits
