Jackie O., where did your smile go?  This beauty, first lady and widow of John F. Kennedy, looks so sad here.

Can’t blame her though, as this silkscreen is from a photograph taken at the funeral of her husband.

Andy didn’t even take the photo himself, but no one cared as Warhol’s fans were caught up in the general hype of his pop-culture output. They were psyched about everything he made, and we can look at Warhol today as one of the art world’s first superstars. I mean, who else could have turned a Campbell’s soup can into a legendary icon?

Warhol made over 300 portraits of Jackie Kennedy, and a bunch of JFK as well.  He used images from the shooting itself, before the assassination, and more from the funeral.  This huge news story was one of the first to play out on public TV, which added to the fervor with which people responded to the tragedy. Warhol’s stark, jarring images capture America’s horrified emotions regarding the incident.
