Cleveland AGS Show 2018

As usual this show is held on Easter Weekend Saturday so as Easter varies in date each year so does the show but it is always well supported. This year the weather was not at all Spring like and rained steady all day, when I set off it was snowing so I chickened out of the 'high' route and instead headed East and lower and it was just rain. I was so glad I took a full set of outdoor waterproof clothing cause did I need it.
There were some really fine plants on display, some of them 'huge', glad I was not carrying them as it is a good distance from the cars to the show hall, I use a trolley which I bought specially for the job...many others use them to.
Walking in to the show hall the first thing you see is Class 1 and what an exhibit it was, shown by Frank and Barbara Hoyle so it is the first picture, the plants were Primula 'Pink Aire', Dionysia aretiodes and Primula 'Marjorie Wooster' back row, Pulsatilla vernalis, Saxifraga cumulus and Tulipa shrenkii at the front
Frank and Barbara also won the Farrer Medal with a huge
Dionysia aretiodes in class 4 ..... was a massive pot, 30cm plus
Corydalis macrocentra from Don Peace in 3, Don had the most points in the Open Section...no surprise there then. Also in Class 3 Tommy Anderson had
Corydalis glaucescens

I should have had
Tulipa shrenkii in the Class 1 lead but missed it so here now
Tom Green had a nice
Draba yunnanensis in 13 and in 6 there were two equal firsts, not seen that often
Primula x meridiana 'Miniera', I think this was shown by the Hoyles and
Primula allionii GFS 1984 shown by Edward Barraclough
Hepatica japonica from Brian and Shelagh Smethurst (4)

Dionysia viscidula x freitagii from Mark Childerhouse (11), showing that it is not only Saxifraga that he grows well
Class 14 Papaveracaea had
Corydalis sewerzowii from Peter Hood and
Corydalis transylvanica from Alan Spenceley
Hepatica Ho Ho Benni from B&S Smethurst in 15, lovely colour this plant has
Another from the Hoyles
Saxifraga 'Coolock Gem'.....I don't know what kind of car they drive but they sure test its springs!

Unlike me I did take some folk/show hall pictures using my phone but the SRGC downsizer cannot get them small enough to post (they are about 5MB) and trying myself on my computer the results are just not worth using so will just have to be flower shots as usual

The best pan Native to North America was won by Alan Spenceley with a massive pot of
Trillium nivale (25) and so won the David Baker Vase. He also had a nice
Anemone caucasica in 89, did not win anything but nice to see. He also exhibited a cactus in the cactus class (86) so I show his plant and two others
Mammillaria woodsii   
Rebutia from Chris Lilley...sorry did not get the full name and
Aylostera heliosa ssp cajasensis from John Dixon

I was judging with Brian Burrow on the day with Tommy Anderson being the third member of the team and we had a good discussion in each class we were judging so was most enjoyable. Brian had quite a few exhibits amongst which were
Iris wilmottiana ...really liked this, he had two in different classes (71 & 91)so you get a picture of both
Dionysia lurorum (55)
Primula vulcuvianensis (75) is from Italy in case you wonder
Oxalis obtusa from Peter Farkasch (79)

Frank and Barbara Hoyle also won the three pan P allionii class (57) with
Primula crusader
Primula allionii 'Joanna' and
Primula allionii BB 03 5 12 and the class for Asiatic primula was won by
Primula bhutanica 'Sherriff's Form' from Rod and Shirley Johnson
Scoliopus bigelovii from Dave Mountford (78)

Rhododendron 'Cream Crest' from John Savage' (34)' I have to say that for me
Rhododendron dauricum 'Hikkaido' was just too good a plant to not even get a third sticker, shown by Alan Furness
Pieris nana 'Redshanks' from Ian Kidman won the Bill Tubbs Trophy for Best Ericacaea still think of it as Arcterica nana
Corydalis gotlandica from John Richards (65)
Draba oreades from David Charlton (64)

I did show a few things
Narcissus 'Douglas Bank' (74) was a nice red sticker job
Saxifraga desoulavyi (90) got nothing but a few folk asked about it
Crocus veluchensis 'Giant White' in 22 struggled all week to open up, was just too cold but still got red. I also had
Saxifraga grisebachii in One Pan Europe (24)..always like this though modern hybrids have so much more flower power though the winner of the class
Saxifraga oppositifolia was a stonker from Mala Janes, earned a C of M

I also had two Saxifraga in a three pan class (54), two of which were
Saxifraga 'Leonardo da Vinci' and the other was
Saxifraga 'Lismore Carmine'

Sue Flanigan had a good day and her exhibits included
Dionysia 'Annielle' in 104, winning the North Riding Trophy for the best pan Primulacaea.


 She also had    Dionysia 'Charleston Primrose'

  and
Callianthemum anemonoides (133)


The best plant in the Intermediate section was
Narcissus cordubensis from Heather Barraclough (111)


Narcissus jonquilla v henriquesii from Raymond Hurd (129) is my last picture to post...sorry the picture is not the best.


I cannot believe how much time I have spent doing this 'report' of the show, has taken up most of the day what with cropping pictures, getting the right look to the picture, then the names, then the down sizing and then having to correct the names once downsized then the actual posts....might be a good job I did not manage to downsize the crows scenes but I actually quite liked them so a bit of a pity.

Dear George - a most noble effort  made to report what was clearly a good show.

If I might make a suggestion?  If you add the photos IN the text box, using the " Inline full-size image" choice to add them - this shows as   attachimg=1    - in square brackets [] - then the system  resizer will add them for you.
 I've  edited your last post to show what that would look like -  the photos  might  show a little larger  then, of course.

This info is elsewhere in the Forum - I'm sorry if you haven't seen it.

Thanks Maggi, first try and could not get it to work. I can not find the 'inline full sized image' choice, ,just ban insert image icon which then won't allow a oicture to be inserted as how I am doing it, ie copy from the image and paste...old man not too computer wise, will try again tomorrow
