Allium ‘Millenium’ is the perennial of the year

Allium Millenium is the perennial plant of 2018 as deemed by the Perrennial Plant Association.

Allium ‘Millenium’ (registered and spelled with one “n”) was selected by the Perennial Plant Association as the “2018 Plant of the Year.” I remember when I first saw this plant on a garden tour several years ago. I just had to find out what it was and then the search was on! It took a year to find it and add it to my garden. It is now one of my favorite perennials — tough and beautiful.

Bred by Mark McDonough, nicknamed the “Onion Man” due to his passion for alliums, ‘Millenium’ was introduced through Plant Delights Nursery in 2000. Unlike the hardy bulb alliums that you buy to plant in the fall, ‘Millenium’ is sold as a growing plant. This is because it is a rhizomatous form of allium.
