Araucaria araucana Monkey puzzle, Chile pine

Araucariaceae

Araucaria araucana Monkey puzzle, Chile pine

Originates in the southern portion of the Andes. The broad, pyramidal, very open crown is made up of main branches arranged in garlands. In older specimens, the top of the crown becomes more rounded, the branches closer together and the branches hang down more. It is a dioecious tree. The female specimens can grow to great heights, while the male trees only grow to about 18 m. The bark is very pleated underneath and is similar to an elephant's foot. Young twigs are green, and later turn brown. The broad, triangular needles are arranged radially around the branch, are very stiff and have a sharp point. A needle can live for 10 to 15 years. The brown, upright cones are almost round and have a diameter of about 15 cm. The tree is difficult to transplant. Araucaria araucana is named after the Araucan Indian tribe of South America. This decorative Araucaria grew in large forests in their native habitat.
Our trees can only be planted when they don't have any leaves. Due to the this we will start delivering again from November 2024.
