Knautia is perennial flower grown for its burgundy blossoms. Thin, branching stems rise above the leaves and bear many dark red flowers, similar to those of the pincushion flower. If the spent flowers are cut off, knautia can bloom over a long period of time.

This is a good choice to add usual color to landscapes. It makes also great companion plant because the branched flowering stalks blend nicely with other landscape plants.

This plant spreads by seed. Its spread can be reduced by maintaining a 3-inch layer of wood mulch.

Knautia grows well at the Xeriscape Demonstration Garden. Its flowers add an unusual color in the late summer garden. Occasionally, we have to remove unwanted seedlings.

Removing the spent blossoms will help prevent the plant from reseeding in places where it isn't desired and encourage prolonged bloom.
