Intro to the Russian Blue

That’s right, you guessed it! The Russian Blues are believed to have originated on Archangel (Arkhangelsk) Island in northern Russia. Russian Blues made their first appearance in the U.S. in the early 1900s, but they didn't become popular until after World War II. The Russian blue ranges in size from 5-12 pounds with a length of 2 feet. Overall they are a healthy breed with a life expectancy of 15-20 years.

Hypoallergenic

One of their main perks of a Russian Blue is that they are hypoallergenic, which means they produce fewer allergens than other breeds. They have lower levels of Fel D 1, the protein in cat saliva and skin secretions responsible for producing allergic reactions. This is one reason why people with allergies are drawn to the Russian Blues. It is important to note, however, that there is no such thing as an 100% hypoallergenic pet.

Physical Characteristics

Russian Blues are a strong and beautiful breed, with firm muscles and a slender, elegant form. Their coat is a gorgeous blue gray color. Silky and plush, the hair stands out at an angle. They are a low shedding breed.

As kittens they are born with blue eyes. As they mature the eye color evolves into a captivating bright green ranging from light green to a deeper emerald green.

One unique feature of this breed is its “smile.” It has a slightly upturned mouth that makes it seem like it is smiling at you. Smiles are contagious so it’s hard to be sad when you have a smiling blue around.

Personality

Russian blues are generally well behaved and known to be some of the smartest breeds. This breed is intelligent and easy to train. Some Russian Blues will even play fetch with you!

The Russian Blue is a perfect blend of independent and friendly. They are okay left home alone, but also love and seek the attention of their owner. When given the opportunity they will generally choose to be around their people so don’t be surprised if you have a new best friend and follower from your new little blue.

They love to be around people and get along well with almost everyone, including children. Russian blues are very loyal and loving to their people, but have a natural sense of shyness around strangers and unfamiliar environments. They prefer things to be predictable and on schedule. Russian Blues are known to be vocal and won’t hesitate to communicate when they want or need something.
