INTRODUCTION 

2012 must be one of the wettest seasons we have ever known, despite this we still 

achieved Gold at all the flower shows we attended, much to our relief and delight. 

We will be attending all the major flower shows again in 2013 and are hoping for a 

much drier summer. 

Half way through 2012 we changed our carrier to UPS which has proved very 

successful, not only are you kept up to date by email of the progress of your delivery 

but it now allows us to send into Europe at reasonable rates. (Prices for this are on 

our Website) 

As usual in 2013 we have 2 RHS events, one in May and one in August, so why not 

join me in an afternoon of pure pelargonium indulgence and homemade cakes of 

course! 

Pay us a visit at the nursery when we have our event days and get tips and 

information on growing your plants. Myself, Ele, Val, Cath and Eileen will be on hand 

to help and answer your questions, or visit us in the spring when we have our own 

garden open for the yellow book (National Garden Scheme).

We are hoping to attend the following shows in 2013. If you would like to arrange to pick up 

plants would you please ring before the show to confirm that we will be attending. Please give 

us as much notice as possible if you are ordering plants for us to take to a show for you to 

collect. Six weeks notice would be ideal. Latest orders to be received five days before first day

Fir Trees NEW INTRODUCTIONS 2013 

This year we bring you 2 

brand new releases which are 

exclusive to us, they are both 

zonal types. 

The first is a dwarf fancy leaf 

called ‘Jips Megan’. It has 

been raised by Tony Burgess 

and will be a good exhibition 

variety. It is a compact plant 

that has the ability to shape 

itself and makes a lovely 

shape with a little help. The 

blooms cope well with damp 

conditions and maintain their 

quality, a definite advantage 

with last years season.

plants already listed so we 

feel that we must be very 

selective.

The second of our new releases has been raised by 

Ken Dymond and is a basic zonal with many 

exhibition qualities called ‘Blackdown Romance’. I 

am sure this one will do well on the show bench, as 

well as on outdoor displays.

COLLECTIONS 

These are groups of plants ideal for the beginner which provide a varied range of plants within a 

certain pelargonium group or a collection with a selection of plants from each of the main 

pelargonium groups. 

1. Each collection will contain cultural instructions. 

2. Like all our mail order the plants we send out are large plants rather than rooted cuttings. 

(9cm pot size) 

3.With the collections we reserve the right to choose the varieties included in the collection. 

4. If you would like two collections of the same group we will do our best to send different 

plants in the second collection. 

5. There are 11 different collections available, and please note these prices are plus post & 

packing, we have changed this due to complications with web orders so this will simplify 

the system. (On the plus side to you, you now only pay one lot of post for as many 

collections as you like, instead of the inc price you paid it on all collections.)

FANCY LEAF PELARGONIUMS

All the plants in this section have as the name suggests, got fancy leaves, either golden, 

bicolour or tricolours. They can be miniature, dwarf or full size and are all of upright habit. 

A HAPPY THOUGHT:- Single deep pink flowers. Green, yellow 

and bronze foliage. Strong grower. 

ASHFIELD JUBILEE:- Single salmon with deeper salmon veins 

from centre of bloom. Well shaped flowers on rounded heads. 

Foliage rich gold with slight zone. Lovely variety. 

BEN FRANKLIN:- (Penn State) Bicolour. Double coral 

flowers.Pretty colour combination. 

BETTE SHELLARD:- (Alan Shellard) Single pink flowers on

PRICE:- £4.50 each These are taller growing than the basic regals but have a longer 

flowering period - They are excellent for container planting and make very handsome plants. 

AUSTRALIAN MYSTERY:- White lower 

petals with notched purple upper petals. 

Very pretty 

BEROMUNSTER :- (Scheen) Flowers are 

white with crimson edge and blotch. 

BLACKCURRANT YHU :- (Fir Trees 

Pelargonium Nursery) A Sport from ‘Yhu’ 

with rich blackcurrant coloured blooms 

edged with pale lilac. Stunning. 

BLACK PRINCE :- Dark purple with white 

edging. 

CHERRY BABY:- This is a sport of 'Royal 

Ascot '. The blooms are a beautiful but 

strange combination of orange and 

raspberry giving a vibrant colour with a clear 

white throat. Very Striking. 

FIR TREES JENNIFER :- (Fir Trees 

Pelargoniums) This is a sport from ’ Fir 

Trees Mark’ . Typical ’Garten Director 

Herman’ flowers, which are large rounded 

petals, purple uppers, white lower petals. 

Good variegated foliage like ’Fir Trees Mark’ 

Blackcurrant Yhu

FIR TREES MARK:- A decorative 

regal with green and gold f oliage. 

Even when not in flower the foliage 

is really bright. Blooms are the 

same as ‘ Australian Mystery ‘, 

notched purple upper petals, white 

lower petals. Much slower and 

more compact than ‘ Austalian 

Mystery ‘ 

FLORIA MOORE:- As above this is 

another sport of ' Royal Ascot ' . 

Found by Mr Eddie Moore and 

named after his wife this is a lovely 

lilac / purple bloom again with a 

white throat. Both sports are very 

prolific. 

My Chance 

MARQUIS OF BUTE :- A 

variegated form of Lord Bute with 

crinkled leaf edges similar to those 

of the regal Silver Anne. 

MY CHANCE:- Deep wine with 

ruffled petals and deeper throat. 

Unusual. 

ROSETO:- (Riccardo Gallucci) Our 

first italian cultivar. An unusual and 

striking colour combination of 

blackcurrant and pale pink. 

ROYAL ASCOT:- Sport of 

'BEROMUNSTER '. Deep 

mahogany with white throat. 

YHU:- Burgundy and rose fuse to 

give a stripey effect. Striking 

variety.

IVY LEAF PELARGONIUMS 


These are all trailing varieties suitable for hanging baskets, hay racks and window boxes. Our 

collection of ivy leaf varieties are the unusual coloured varieties with fancy leaves. Many of 

the ivy leaf varieties have a condition known as ' Odema '- and is caused by the plant 

taking up large amounts of water quickly- The cells on the backs of the leaves known as the 

' Stomata' swell then burst- they then scab (Heal) over resulting in the back of the leaf 

looking as it is covered in small brown blisters. Do not remove the leaves as this is 

completely natural for the plant.

BALANCED FEED for 1 week followed by 3 weeks of HIGH POTASH FEED 

this regime will keep your plants lush and green and at the same time 

flowering profusely. 

We have two feeds available which we recommend you use in conjunction with each 

other. The 2 feeds which we use on the nursery are a BALANCED FEED which we use 

from February to October (This promotes healthy leaf and growth as well as promoting 

flower buds) The other feed we use is a HIGH POTASH FEED which we use from April 

through to October combined with the BALANCED FEED.(HIGH POTASH FEED 

promotes flower and good flower colour.)

CULTURAL NOTES FOR PELARGONIUMS 

The genus pelargonium is a group of plants which are tender perennials i.e. they are not frost 

hardy, so must be protected from English winters preferably under heated glass or on a sunny 

windowsill in a heated room of the house.Pelargoniums need not rest unlike many other plants. 

In fact if we can provide them with adequate heat, light and water they will continue to flower all 

the year round. 

Once a young plant is aqcuired check the plant for being pot bound, gently knock it out of its pot, 

look at the roots, if they are wrapped around the pot, it is time to move the plant on into a larger 

pot. We would recommend our own pelargonium mix compost as it is loam based it is free 

draining, a must for pelargoniums. Usually a plant will grow quite happily in a pot for about 5 - 6 

weeks before it requires potting on again, but I would recommend regular potting on. Repotting in 

the spring after the long dark winter months is important to give the plant a boost. Along with the 

potting on, pinching of the growing points is very important to maintain a good shape to the plant. 

Ideally the stopping (pinching) programme should begin with a rooted cutting or at least as soon 

as you get the plant, then stop each side shoot and as the plant grows keep up the pinching 

process to build up a tight network of branches each producing a mass of buds and flowers. It 

pays to sacrifice the first flowers of a young plant to build up a branch structure and neat 

shape - this will later reward you with many more f lowers than those first few early flowers which 

tend to drain the young plants energies. 

Feeding is very important – We would recommend feeding with a high potash feed 

every time you water your plants or at least once a week throughout the growing 

season(April-September). 

The position of the plant is also a very important factor as to how well the plant will do. All 

varieties and groups of pelargoniums can withstand early spring sun and tricolours especially will 

benefit from the high light intensity, however the strong sun of June through to August is usually 

too hot for many of the more tender leaved pelargoniums. It is mainly the golden leaved and pale 

edged tricolour and bicolour varieties that suffer from burning up at the edges of the leaves and 

in intense heat will look unsightly with brown edges to most of the leaves. Once the weather has 

cooled down the plants will soon recover and regain their colour and freshness. Position these 

varieties in a cool shady place, ether indoors or out, if grown in a greenhouse place plants on the 

floor near a door under the greenhouse staging. Advice can be given on individual varieties on 

request. During the late autumn months plants grown outside should be brought into either the 

house and grown as a house plant on a sunny windowsill or in a heated greenhouse preferably 

at 42 degrees F or higher if possible. If heat can not be given the plants should be kept on the 

dry side but should be given some water maybe once a week on a sunny morning so that they 

drain off before the night temperatures drop. Also these plants should be covered overnight with 

fleece, newspaper or bubble polythene e.t.c. and uncovered the next morning to give them light. 

Ventilation is also important for plants grown under glass, give as much ventilation as 

possible all the year round - weather permitting.Cuttings can be taken from April until 

September without bottom heat. Angel and Regal varieties are the exceptions and need to be 

taken when the temperatures are cool ( October to April) but bottom heat must be provided. 

Detailed advice can be given on any propagation problems on request.

catalogue we reserve the right to delay orders if such varieties are not available and a waiting 

period may exist. As usual we will endeavor to do our best to supply your order as soon as 

possible. Please allow 6-8 weeks during busy show season. We would strongly advise that 

orders required in April / May are sent in early (at least by Jan / Feb) to avoid 

disappointment. Any U.K deliveries where the carrier has to cross water on a ferry will incure a 

£10.00 surcharge. We can send to Northern Ireland but this will incure the £10.00 surcharge.

6. All plants are individually labelled and wrapped and all orders are accompanied with a 

leaflet on cultural guidelines. 

7. We reserve the right to substitute any plants which are not available. Please indicate which 

you require. However we will inform you of our choice of substitutes before dispatch, so as not 

to send varieties you may already have.

9. Plants sent out in mainland U.K. are all sent by carrier which enables us to :a) 

Send large plants (ex 9cm pots). 

b) Guarantee next day delivery - overnight travelling so in hot weather the plants travel in the 

cool of the night. 

c) Telephone you the day before delivery so you can make arrangements for receiving your 

order. Please give a contact number as we cannot dispatch orders without arranging for a safe 

place to leave the parcel if you are not going to be in on the delivery day.
