INTRODUCTION<br />
<strong>Taylors</strong> nurseries was established in 1982 and is a family run<br />
business. About fourteen years ago we developed a specialist<br />
interest in clematis and since that time we have collected<br />
approximately 400 different varieties. Plants may be purchased<br />
either from the nursery, by appointment only, where we have<br />
300 varieties for sale at any one time, via mail order, at various<br />
flower shows which we attend or on the internet. Most of the<br />
photographs in this catalogue were taken by us on our nursery.<br />

PLANTING<br />
Prepare the site by digging a hole 18” square and at least 18” deep. Break up the soil at the base of the hole and<br />
dig in a handful of bone meal. Soak your plant in a bucket of water for twenty minutes then remove the pot.<br />
Place your plant in the hole so that the top of the root ball is about 5” below ground level, snipping off lower<br />
leaves, then backfill with a mixture of peat/compost and garden soil. If your soil dries out quickly or your<br />
plant is in a position where it receives very little water, place an open ended pipe (About 1-2” diameter) in<br />
the planting hole, one end close to the rootball the other just above ground level. By adopting this procedure<br />
water can be conveyed to the plants roots where it is most needed in times of drought.<br />
CLEMATIS WILT<br />
Healthy plants should not get clematis wilt. Prevent infection by drenching with a suitable systemic<br />
fungicide, e.g. “Doff Plant Disease Control” or “Spotless”. Please read manufacturers instructions carefully<br />
before handling this product. If a plant develops wilt, cut the stem back to below the wilted section, burn or<br />
destroy all wilted growth. Water and feed normally after growth restarts. <strong>Clematis</strong> wilt only normally affects<br />
large flowering varieties.<br />
PRUNING<br />
Some people like to prune their newly planted clematis hard to 12” the first February/ March after planting.<br />
This is to encourage a strong bushy plant. <strong>Clematis</strong> that are already multi-stemmed may be left, especially<br />
early flowering types and evergreens.<br />
GROUP ONE (G1) - NO PRUNING<br />
These are varieties which flower on the previous seasons growth, they all flower early in the season. They<br />
include alpinas, macropetalas, montanas and the evergreens. No pruning is required other than removing<br />
any dead or excessive growth immediately after flowering. Pruning these types at any other time may result<br />
in no or fewer flowers.<br />
GROUP TWO (G2) - PRUNE LIGHT<br />
This group consists of all early large flowered hybrids, including double and semi-double varieties. The<br />
main flowering period is May to June. When this period is over at the end of June you may give your<br />
clematis a prune. Possibly a third to half of the plant pruned back or as much as you think is necessary to<br />
keep it looking neat and tidy. Then start to feed again with a high potash fertilizer in accordance with the<br />
manufacturers instructions. This will encourage new growth and more flowers for August and September<br />
time. Then in February or March prune very lightly to the first pair of strong buds and cut out any dead or<br />
weak stems.<br />
GROUP THREE (G3) - PRUNE HARD<br />
Large flowering hybrids that flower after June, viticellas, texensis, herbaceous and tanguticas all fall into<br />
this group. These produce flowers on the current seasons growth and should be reduced to two strong leaf<br />
buds in February/March, this will normally be 12-18” from the ground. Failure to prune these varieties may<br />
result in your plant becoming bare of leaves and flowers near the base.<br />

PLANTING IN CONTAINERS<br />
Many varieties of clematis are suitable for planting in containers. In order to get good results and maximum<br />
flowers, compact varieties should be chosen. (Maximum height 12ft.) Good feeding and plenty of water is<br />
essential to maintain the condition of the plant and prolong flowering. With a little bit of perseverance you<br />
can achieve wonderful results. Terracota, stone, concrete or wood containers may be used, avoid plastic<br />
as they will get too hot for the roots in summer. To get the best results a large pot should be used (approx<br />
18” deep x 18” in diameter.) Smaller ones can be used but only in the short term. Your container needs<br />
good drainage, this can be achieved by placing 2-3” of gravel in the bottom. We recommend the rest of<br />
the pot to be filled with John Innes No 3. When planting the clematis, 5” of the stem needs to be buried.<br />
The roots must be shaded by planting something around the top or covering with stone.<br />
ONCE PLANTED KEEP WELL WATERED & FED.<br />
If after a few years your plant becomes root bound you can try root pruning. To achieve this, tip it out of the<br />
pot when it is dormant and gently cut approx 3” of the root away. Re-pot into fresh compost and add three<br />
to four controlled release fertilizer tablets.<br />

Conditions of Sale<br />
This catalogue cancels any previous issues. All varieties are offered subject<br />
to availability, we reserve the right to alter prices anytime throughout the<br />
season. Every effort is made to see that our stock is correctly named and<br />
of the highest quality, however, neglect, poor planting conditions, adverse<br />
weather conditions and damage by animals could lead to plants failing.<br />
It is therefore impossible for us to consider complaints fourteen days after<br />
purchase. Plants will be replaced at our discretion on the understanding that<br />
the whole plant is returned along with the label and proof of posting within<br />
fourteen days. The placing of an order or the acceptance of a plant implies<br />
the acceptance of these conditions. The descriptions and photographs in<br />
this catalogue are intended as a guide only, planting varieties in different<br />
aspects and climates can have an effect on colour, height and fl owering.<br />
Mail Order (Next Day UK - between 9am and 3pm)<br />
Because we care about the condition of our plants we operate a next day<br />
delivery service, this does not allow them to suffer while being left in a box<br />
for a week or more in transit. This is an all year round service. Delivery<br />
days are Tuesdays, wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. We would<br />
appreciate it if you could give us a day and date you will be home (or we<br />
could send them to your work place) as we require a signature on delivery.<br />
If you can not receive the plants they may be left with a neighbour or left in<br />
a safe place of your choice without a signature at your own risk. Payment<br />
can be made by cheque, postal order or credit cards. Cheques should be<br />
made payable to <strong>Taylors</strong> <strong>Clematis</strong> with your name and address written<br />
on the back. If you wish to pay by credit card please fi ll in the box on the<br />
order form and double check your details are correct. Plants will not be<br />
dispatched until payment has been received.<br />
