Paris Hilton sentenced to 45 days in jail
A California Superior Court judge sentenced Paris Hilton to 45 days in jail Friday for violating her probation in an alcohol-related reckless driving case. She must go to jail on June 5 as a result of violating her probation by driving with a suspended license earlier this year. Judge Michael T. Sauer ruled after a hearing that the Simple Life star will not be allowed any work release, furloughs, use of an alternative jail, or any electronic monitoring in lieu of jail. ”I’m very sorry, and from now on I’m going to pay complete attention to everything. I’m sorry, and I did not do it on purpose at all,” she told the judge before he announced the sentence. (CNN)

Tyler to play Betty Ross in Hulk
Liv Tyler will star opposite Edward Norton in Marvel Studios’ The Incredible Hulk, which is being directed by Louis Leterrier. Tyler will play scientist Betty Ross, the longtime love interest of Bruce Banner/the Hulk (Norton) who tries to help him get rid of his monstrous alter ego. The movie will start with Ross estranged from Banner, but she finds her way back to him as the pursuit of the Hulk puts Banner on the run trying to cure his condition. Jennifer Connolly played Ross in Ang Lee’s 2003 Hulk film. Filming on the new movie is scheduled to start this summer. Tyler will next be seen in the indie comedy Smother and the thriller The Strangers. She also recently appeared with Adam Sandler in Mike Binder’s Reign Over Me. (Hollywood Reporter)

John Malkovich set for Coens’ Burn After Reading
John Malkovich is in talks to star with George Clooney, Brad Pitt, and Frances McDormand in the Coen Brothers’ dark comedy Burn After Reading. The screenplay is being kept under tight wraps, but it is thought that Malkovich would play Ozzie Cox, a former CIA agent who loses the disc of the memoir he is writing, while McDormand will play Cox’s philandering wife, and Clooney will play an assassin. It is unclear what Pitt’s character will be. Joel and Ethan Coen wrote the screenplay, and Joel will direct. Shooting is scheduled to begin in August. Malkovich will next be seen in Robert Zemeckis’ Beowulf and Sean McGinly’s The Great Buck Howard. ( Hollywood Reporter)

Laura Ramsey, Jena Malone, Shawn Ashmore join The Ruins
Laura Ramsey (She’s the Man), Jena Malone (Pride and Prejudice), and Shawn Ashmore (X-Men) will star alongside Jonathan Tucker (The Black Donnellys) in the thriller The Ruins, DreamWorks and Spyglass’ adaptation of the Scott B. Smith novel. Smith also wrote the screenplay. The story is about group of friends vacationing in Mexico when they accompany a fellow tourist on a remote archaeological dig in the jungle, where something evil lives among the ruins. Red Hour Films’ Ben Stiller and Stuart Cornfeld are producing along with Chris Bender. The movie will be the feature directorial debut for Carter Smith, whose short Bugcrush won the Short Filmmaking Award at 2006’s Sundance. Production on Ruins begins later this month. Film from Limp Bizkit’s Durst wins Tribeca award
The directorial debut from Limp Bizkit frontman Fred Durst, The Education of Charlie Banks, won the Made in NY best narrative feature award Thursday (May 3) at the Tribeca Film Festival. The movie stars Jesse Eisenberg (The Squid and the Whale) as the title character, Chris Marquette (Alpha Dog, Joan of Arcadia) as his best friend, and Jason Ritter (The Class, Joan of Arcadia) as a volatile former classmate who pays them an unexpected visit at the private college they’re attending, several years after the three of them left the rough neighborhood of New York where they grew up. Witherspoon developing true-crime feature
Reese Witherspoon’s Type A Films is developing Under the Bridge, a film based on Rebecca Godfrey’s true-crime account of a brutal high school murder in a small British Columbia town in 1997 and the ensuing investigation and prosecution. Godfrey, who is from the area, researched the eight high schoolers charged in the case, investigating the cliques at the group’s well-off school. It is unknown if Witherspoon will star in the project. Catherine Hardwicke (Thirteen) is in talks to direct. (Hollywood Reporter)

The CW teams with Idol producers for reality show
The CW is partnering with FremantleMedia North America, the producers of American Idol, for a dating reality show called Farmer Wants a Wife. The program (based on a UK reality show) will recruit 10 women fed up with big city dating and introduce them to a country-living bachelor who offers them the simple life. The women will compete in a series of challenges designed to test their adeptness at farm living, such as caring for farm animals and driving a tractor. The show has been given an eight-episode order and will air in the 2007-08 season. (Variety)

Matthew Modine joins Weeds
Matthew Modine will appear in at least 10 episodes of Showtime series Weeds. He will play Sullivan, a developer putting up a building, funded by a church, adjacent to the show’s fictional town of Agrestic. Nancy (Mary-Louise Parker) and Celia (Elizabeth Perkins) will both be romantically tied to Modine’s character, and Nancy will end up working for him. (Variety)

Dax Shepard tapped for Baby Mama
Dax Shepard (Let’s Go to Prison) will join Tina Fey, Sigourney Weaver, and Amy Poehler in Universal’s comedy Baby Mama. The story, written by former Saturday Night Live writer Michael McCullers, is about a single woman (Fey) whose desire to have a child and keep her career leads her to hire a surrogate (Poehler). Shepard will play the philandering husband of Poehler, who tries to scam the surrogate and winds up bringing the two women together. Shooting is scheduled to begin this month. Lorne Michaels and John Goldwyn are producing, and Jill Messick is executive producing. Shepard will next be seen with Liv Tyler and Diane Keaton in Smother. (Hollywood Reporter)

Morris Chestnut to star in Not Easily Broken
Morris Chestnut (Ladder 49, Like Mike) will star in Screen Gems’ Not Easily Broken, a drama based on a book by T.D. Jakes (Woman Thou Art Loosed). The story is about a couple whose strength and faith are tested after the wife is injured in a car crash and the husband becomes attracted to another woman. Chestnut will also executive produce. Bill Duke (Cover) is directing with shooting scheduled to start June 11. Chestnut will next be seen with Kyra Segwick and The Rock in Walt Disney Pictures’ The Game and in A Perfect Christmas opposite Queen Latifah and Terrence Howard. (Hollywood Reporter)

Sopranos‘ Schirripa doing movie for Nickelodeon
Steven Schirripa, best known as Bobby ”Bacala” Baccalieri on The Sopranos, is developing an original TV movie for Nickelodeon based on his book Nicky Deuce: Welcome to the Family, which he co-wrote with Charles Fleming. The story is about a suburban teen who moves to Brooklyn to live temporarily with his grandmother and uncle, who might be a gangster. Schirripa, a Brooklyn native, will executive produce and is expected to play the uncle. (Hollywood Reporter )

Haitian director to helm Karl Marx biopic
Haitian director Raoul Peck will helm Karl Marx, a biopic about the German philosopher and revolutionary founding father of communism. The English-language movie will cover the period between 1830-48, including Marx’s time in Paris before being expelled to Brussels and culminating with the publication of the Communist Manifesto. The movie also will cover Marx’s love for his aristocratic wife Jenny von Westphalen, and his friendship with Friedrich Engels, with whom he co-authored the Manifesto. Shooting is scheduled to start in February 2008 with a release later that year. (Hollywood Reporter )
