Taste

Taste Score: 6/10

I thought that these were very sweet, and enjoyed the touch of chocolate.

I did not like the strong coconut notes (but that’s just because I’m not a coconut fan) If you like coconut flavors, you’ll probably love these hunks!

I did enjoy the texture. It was very dense and moist, like a hearty cookie.

However, once refrigerated (on the package it suggests refrigerating them after opening to keep fresh), the texture is more dried out.

Husband really enjoyed these and several!

Ingredients

Apparently Heavenly Hunks is made with ‘real ingredients’ (as mentioned on their website)- but I’m not really sure what ‘real ingredients’ is trying to indicate!

Here are in the ingredients for the organic oatmeal dark chocolate flavor, as taken form the picture above:

“Ingredients: Organic gluten-free oats, organic dark chocolate chips (organic cane sugar, organic chocolate liquor, organic cocoa butter, organic sunflower lecithin, organic vanilla extract), organic brown rice syrup, organic palm shortening, organic coconut shreds, organic cane sugar, organic brown sugar (organic cane sugar, organic molasses), organic sorghum flour, organic tapioca flour, organic potato starch, organic sugars, sea salt, vitamin E.”

Love that oats are the first ingredient! Ingredients are listed in decondensing order- from contributing the most to the least weight of the total product.

Oats contribute a variety of nutrients and fiber.

Saturated fat likely comes from the chocolate chips, palm shortening, and coconut shreds.

I’ll go over why it’s important to keep saturated low, but it’s also worth noting that some research suggests that the saturated fat from cocoa butter (primarily stearic acid) may have a more neutral effect on LDL (the type of cholesterol you don’t want to be high) (1).

A could not find out where the cocoa for the chocolate was sourced form.

This is personally important to me, as many areas that farm cocoa may engage in unfair labor practices- more on that in this article.

Also, for those who find it important, my package did say that the palm oil is ‘sustainably sourced.’

Nutrition

nutrition facts on heavenly hunks organic oatmeal dark chocolate package

I’ve included some select nutrition facts as taken from the picture above -for “1 hunk (28 grams)”:

  • Calories: 110
  • Saturated fat: 3.5 grams
  • Sodium: 40 milligrams
  • Carbohdyraes: 15 grams
  • Fiber: 1 gram
  • Added Sugars: 9 grams
  • Protein: 1 gram

One serving can be considered a low sodium (2) and one carbohydrate choice per the American Diabetes Association (1 carb choice is about 15 grams of carbohydrates) (3).

I was really surprised to see that they only have 1 gram of fiber per serving with oats being the first ingredient.

Like several other cookies, these contribute a decent amount of added sugars and saturated fat.

We want to keep these low in our overall diet for a variety of reasons, including heart health.

Again, these are cookies!

It’s important to keep treats in mind of an overall healthy diet. They contribute little in terms of nutrition and could displace other nutrient dense foods.

Portion

hand holding one heavenly hunk organic oatmeal dark chocolate cookie or 'hunk.'

Like the name implies, one serving is a thick chunk. (check out the picture above for a close up!)

While I can easily eat two, the one serving will likely satisfy that craving for a little ‘something-something’ after lunch or dinner.

Price

I got this for $ 9.99 USD at Costco. With 22 servings (‘hunks’) in the package, that’s about 45 cents per cookie. Which is quite expensive!

For comparison, Oreo’s at Costco are only about 26 cents per serving (around $13.49 USD for a 52 serving package). That’s just a bit shy of half the price per serving!

However, the Heavenly Hunks in this article are made with organic ingredients, so you might expect the price tag to be higher.

Would I Buy these again?

Probably not! I think the coconut flavor was too strong for me, and I personally would want to know more about the cocoa sourcing.

That being said, I will be on the lookout to try the other flavors (or snag some from Amazon)!

Here’s a quick summary of the pros and cons of the dark chocolate oatmeal flavor (again- my opinion)!:

Pros

  • Pretty tasty and enjoyable texture.
  • A bit healthier than many other desserts
  • Organic (if that is important to you)

Cons

  • Pricey
  • A bit dry after being in the fridge.
  • Strong coconut flavor (just be aware if you don’t like coconut flavor!)
  • Saturated fat
  • Added sugars
  • Unsure where the cocoa is sourced from (may be sourced from areas where unfair labor practices are prevalent).
