Super Purple Butterly Bush!
Black Knight is one of the boldest colors of all Butterfly bushes. Introduced in 1959 in Holland by Moerheim Nursery, it still is the most requested and successful Buddleia ever produced. In 1993, it was rewarded the RHS Award of Garden Merit. Midnight violet-purple flower spikes with tiny yellow eyes cover this fast-growing plant, reaching up 6 feet tall and 3-4 feet wide. Flowers grow up to 10” and will last for weeks, attracting butterflies and hummingbirds in droves. These beautiful blooms have an amazing fragrance! The fragrance will add a sweet scent to the air in your garden, so always stay down wind of it for maximum enjoyment.
Plant your Black Knight in a sunny location where it can stretch out and grow. Best uses are a specimen planting, hedges, or background borders. After the blooms start to fade, they can be easily trimmed to shape to encourage flowering of the new growth. In early spring, give the plant a hard trim to get it into spring shape, the harder the better. If you like the free branching look, just trim the spent flowers and more will come. You will enjoy flowers from late spring till early frost, depending on your growing zone.
Black Knight is an easy choice for the novice gardener. Once established (usually first year of enjoyment), it is very drought tolerant and lower maintanance than other Buddleia, making it a perfect first purchase plant. Black Knight is cold hardy from zone 5-9, making this a great choice for colder climates.
Black Knight's midnight blooms and sweet fragrance are a beacon for bees and butterflies. The aroma and long flowers make this plant an endless buffet of nectar for our biggest fans. Deer and rabbits will ignore this plant, making it an added value garden must have.
