Two weeks ago, I went rock climbing in California. 🧗♂️ I took away more than just sore muscles and bloody appendages. So chalk up. This week’s content is what I learned hundreds of feet up in Joshua Tree. Lesson 1️⃣: Don’t be defined by the grade. To appreciate this lesson you need background. Sport climbing in the US uses the Yosemite Decimal System (YDS). The first number (1-5) refers to the class or vertical of the climb. Class 1 = flat ground, class 5 = anything requiring a rope. The number(s) after the decimal refers to the grade or difficulty of the climb, and the letter after the provides further specificity on the grade (because not all grades are created equal). The image below by Sportrock Climbing Centers shows the YDS and the comparable French Grading Scale (for all my international folks). For context, me and my friend were climbing 5.8’s through 5.10b’s alongside a guide. The guide asked questions about our background with climbing, then took us on specific climbs to assess our physical AND mental abilities. This gave him insight on where to take us next. After completing the first climb or two, I began to ask the same questions, What’s the grade? Is it harder than the last one? The guide refused to tell me. I asked him why? “Because I don’t want you becoming arrogant or intimidated based on the grade.” Lesson 1️⃣: Don’t let the “grade” define you. You’ll either be humbled by your hubris, or you’ll never experience your true potential because of fear. #ruppertlandscape #businessdeveloper #construction #california #rockclimbing #coachcarteriykyk

In my experience, physical pursuits, especially those that push the limits *I think I have*, are incredibly fertile ground for meditation, growth and serenity. Plus you generally learn some rad new terms like flapper, whipper, hangdog and send...

That’s really cool. Great ego check for sure. Reminds be a lot of the new to the scene bodybuilder Sam Sulek. He chats often about not comparing yourself to others, the issues of ego lifting, and a variety of different items. Hope you had a great time!
