Last Friday was one of those special days that puts a big smile on my face. Two of our youngest team members (indentities hidden to protect the innocent!) in the HPE Data Services and Storage team had been working hard for many months on a proposal for a new prospective customer who was looking to refresh their data management platform. This potential customer is a leading Cancer Research Institute who absolutely relies on their data to power their research and ultimtely gain grants to fund their incredibly important work. Suffice to say, their choice of solution is a critical decision as it will power their success over the next 5+ years. The customer is not a current customer of HPE Storage, and our two young team members had been putting in huge hours into developing the proposal and working closely with the customer to build their trust and demonstrate our unique value. On Friday, I joined our young team members in a meeting with the customer which we thought was to answer questions and provide some clarification on our proposed solution. We were a little surprised, but absolutely thrilled when the customer informed us that they had chosen HPE as their preferred solution. Upon reflection, I was blown away by what these two early career team members had achieved over the course of 6 months. They had listened intently and learnt from the customer about thier key decision criteria. They had proven themselves as not only technically skilful in the solution design, but also commerically creative to ensure the proposed solution delivered a strong ROI and long-term customer value. They were also humble and rather than trying to 'own' the solution end-to-end, they partnered actively, working with a key reseller, a distributor and a technology partner to bring unique skills and capabilities to the overall solution and build customer trust quickly. Importantly, they had also opened themeselves to coaching and guidance from one of the older more experienced team members. The speed at which these two team members have grown in their first few years with HPE has re-inforced to me that talent only requires hard work and the right opportunity it to show itself. Finally, it was a great reminder that diversity in experience and hunger is always helpful. The young energise the older, whilst the older guides the young. It made me think back to my early career days on the EDS Graduate Program (Photo - 1997 - that's me in the David Byrne suit!😉). I could never have achieved what these two young HPE'ers have done in the same amount of time. And to the customer, thank you for your trust. We're excited to move into build and implementation and then watching in awe as your scientists and researchers leverage their data to discover the next generation of breakthroughs in the fight against cancer. However, I never realised just how much amazing team work is required to even get to the start line of a Formaula 1 event. Last weekend, at the 🏎 Melbourne Grand Prix, we gained an up-close look at the key elements that have carried the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula One Team to such success. 💡 My Top 5 learnings were: 1️⃣ The power of "team" and what is possible when the "team" unites behind a singlular vision. 2️⃣ To rise above the competition (in sport or business), is often a game of 'millimeters'. 3️⃣ Data is a key element that will help you be the 'disruptor' and not the 'disrupted'. It not only makes you precise (see #2), it lays the foundation for prediction, modelling and grasping the possible. 4️⃣ Persistance and consistancey are superpowers - Thank you to Sir Lewis Hamilton who shared about being persistant and consistant in his fight for increased diversity in motorsport. 5️⃣ Finally, like Mercedes on the weekend, things don't always go your way. It's how you re-group as a team, stay focussed on the vision, analyse the situation, and persist in finding the solution that will get you back on the track. A sepcial thanks to Michael Taylor, Head of IT at Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula One Team, for his insights of how they leverage an eye-popping amount of data to not only design and build their best car, but how to continually optimise performance, manage costs (yes, F1 has a budget cap to adhere to!), and even simulate and predict race outcomes in real time.
